Another thing I have gained from running, in addition to the huge sense of achievement I mentioned before, is the new found perspective I get in relation to other areas of my life.
Let me explain. One evening whilst out with the running club, I found myself struggling to keep up with the rest of the group. Instead of keeping calm I began to get very upset. I felt I was letting myself down as well as my lovely running buddy. I also felt responsible for the situation we found ourselves in as well as worrying about what the other runners were thinking. As I got more and more upset my friend said "Zoe, we're running our own race". It's amazing how a few words can change your perspective and make things a lot clearer. From then on I let go of my upset and worry about what the others were thinking and instead ended up pushing myself more than I'd ever done before and having a laugh along the way.
Since then these words have helped me when I've gone down the slippery slope of comparing my parenting skills with others or even my child's abilities with another. I now use the statement 'I'm running my own race' to get me out of all sorts of negative patterns where I start to belittle my achievements, abilities etc. And it really helps me not get too attached to how my daughter is handling life when I realise that she too is running her own race.
Here's wishing you all the very best on your own special race!
Warmest wishes,
Zoe
Great post Zoe and one that particularly rings true for me. Over 30 years ago now I was in a similar situation to yours and my dear friend Dave said "joanie, just run your own race, that's all you need to do" and that is something that I too endeavour to do in all areas of my life. A great lesson.
